32 Marathon Challenge

Starting on the 2nd July, Gerry Duffy and Ken Whitelaw are going to attempt to run 32 marathons in 32 consecutive days in the 32 counties of Ireland to raise funds for charity.

Ken and Gerry

Irish Autism Action and Autism NI are going to be the main benefactors of the funds raised but Gerry and Ken also wish to give a portion of the proceeds to the Irish Cancer Society.

Although this unique challenge has never before being tried in Ireland, to make it truly special Gerry and Ken are asking 32 different people to join them each day to run, jog or waddle either a full or a half marathon. In addition they are asking people who don’t wish to run to come and walk a mile or two as part of a Walkathon.

This is where you come in – to raise as much money as possible for the charities they need as many people as possible to come and run with them on just one leg of their journey. Over 400 have signed up already but they are asking you to consider joining them for what is possibly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take part in a marathon or half marathon in your local county.

To participate you are asked to raise as much as they possibly can. They are targetting €600 for people wanting to run 13.1 miles or a €1,000 for those wishing to do a full. However bottom line is they want people simply to raise as much as they can, no more no less. As the website says “Some will raise more, some will raise less, every cent helps”.

To encourage you to don a pair of runners the guys have talked a number of well know faces to join them along the way.

Thus far the following well known faces have promised to RUN the following;

  • Michael O Leary running two half marathons with the lads.
  • Keith Duffy doing one full and one half marathon and possibly a third.
  • Charmaine Kenny the Rose of Tralee is doing a half marathon in Kildare.
  • Katryn Thomas is running a full marathon in her native Carlow.
  • Brian Kennedy is running a full marathon on the second leg of this epic challenge.

Good luck to the lads and all participating in this great event! To learn more about this event go to www.32marathons.com
