Fota Island hosted the first event in an innovative new golf tour created especially for Ireland’s top amateur club golfers on Sunday.
Over eighty of the regions best players competed in the TopGolfer Fota Island Senior Scratch Cup over the Deerpark Golf Course in Cork in magnificent spring sunshine. Alan Thomas, the scratch golfer from Tramore took the inaugural title with a superb three under round of 68 to secure his place at the season ending TopGolfer Tour Championship. Second place went to Fota member Thomas O’Flynn who shot 70 closely followed by Sean Barry of Lee Valley who finished with a level par 71.
TopGolfer is Ireland’s community for golfers with a handicap of 9 or better. The TopGolfer Tour will run until September with events spread throughout the four provinces including at Enniscrone, Galgorm Castle, Fota Island, Faithlegg, The Heritage, Arklow, St Margarets and Stackstown.
Each event will offer the chance to win some impressive prizes from big brands such as Callaway, ECCO, Motocaddy and Kartel. Every competitor at every event is also assured of a player pack which includes a sleeve of the latest Callaway tour golf balls amongst other things. Of particular interest though is that the winner of each event will receive an invite to compete in the TopGolfer Tour Championship, a two day finale which will take place at the end of October at Carton House.
TopGolfer sponsors include Andalucía, Betfair, Callaway, Citizen, Ecco, Jointace, Kartel, Motocaddy, Nature Valley, Setanta and Wellington Eye Clinic.
Rob Hill of TopGolfer said “This has been a fantastic start to the TopGolfer Tour. The Deerpark Course at Fota was in superb condition as always, we had blue skies all day and huge congratulations to Alan Thomas on winning the title and his place at the TopGolfer Tour Championship. Three under par is an excellent round of golf on this championship course so he’s really set the standard for all our other tour competitors.”
It is free to join the TopGolfer Community online which not only provides information on all thirty tour events but also provides access to a members’ forum, blogs, competitions and tour news. New members are also in with a chance to win a very special Callaway tour bag autographed by Ernie Els.”
